Getting started

Switching Phones Without Losing Your Inventory

A new phone shouldn't mean rebuilding your inventory from memory. CardOps has no account to sign back into, so the handoff comes down to a few checks, not a migration project.

Every few years the phone changes and the inventory has to survive the move. For a dealer running hundreds of cards, dozens of past shows, and live cost basis on everything in the case, that used to mean a spreadsheet export, a prayer, and a night spent re-entering whatever didn't come through. CardOps was built with no account at all, which changes the shape of the problem: there is nothing to log back into, because there is nothing to log into in the first place.

There's no account because there's no server copy to reconnect to

CardOps never asks for a name, an email, or a password. There's no account, full stop. Your inventory lives on the device and in your own private iCloud, the same Apple account that already backs up your photos and messages. That's the whole reason a phone switch isn't a migration: you aren't moving data between two company servers, you're letting two devices on the same Apple ID sync the way iCloud already does.

Practically, that means the "transfer" step most apps make you do, exporting an account, requesting a data download, waiting on a support ticket, doesn't exist here. Sign into the new phone with the same Apple ID you already use, open the app, and iCloud does the rest.

Before you wipe the old phone

  • Let the old phone finish syncing. Open CardOps, let it sit on a stable connection for a few minutes, and confirm nothing shows as pending or unsaved. A card logged minutes before a wipe is the one most likely to not have synced yet.
  • Check your card count. Note the total inventory value or card count on the dashboard before you do anything else. It's the fastest way to confirm later that the new phone landed with everything intact.
  • Confirm you're signed into iCloud, not just the app. The sync runs through your Apple ID's private iCloud container, so the account that matters is the one in Settings, not a login inside CardOps.

Setting up the new phone

Sign into the same Apple ID first, during the new phone's initial setup or in Settings afterward, before you open CardOps. Then install the app and open it. Inventory, past shows, and cost basis should populate from iCloud without any import step. On a strong connection this is usually fast; on a slower one, give it a few minutes before assuming anything is missing.

Once it's populated, check the same number you noted on the old phone: card count or total inventory value. If they match, the move is done. If something looks off, don't wipe the old phone yet, keep both around until the numbers agree.

A CSV export is a sensible backup, not a requirement

iCloud sync is the primary path and it works without anything extra from you, but a big phone migration is still a reasonable moment to export a CSV as a belt-and-braces backup. It's a free import, a Pro export: pulling your inventory into a CSV file first means you have a plain, readable copy sitting outside of iCloud entirely, in case the new phone has a setup problem unrelated to the app, a broken SIM, a bad reset, anything.

Think of it as the same instinct as backing up photos before a big trip: iCloud alone is usually enough, but a second copy costs you two minutes and removes any "what if" from the week you're relying on the new phone at a show.

If something doesn't look right

The most common cause of a short-looking inventory after a switch is simply time: a big iCloud sync can take a few minutes longer on an unfamiliar network. Give it a little room before concluding anything is missing. Beyond that, confirm both phones were actually on the same Apple ID, since a second iCloud account (a work device, a family member's login used by mistake) looks exactly like missing data but is really a different account's empty container. If the numbers still don't match after a genuine wait and a confirmed Apple ID, your CSV backup, if you made one, is the fallback worth having.

Questions dealers ask

Do I need to create an account to move my inventory to a new phone?

No. CardOps has no account at all. Your data lives on the device and in your own private iCloud, so signing into the same Apple ID on the new phone is what carries everything over.

What if I don't use iCloud, or I'm switching to a different Apple ID?

Sync relies on the Apple ID's private iCloud container, so a different Apple ID starts with an empty one. Export a CSV from the old phone first, then import it on the new phone and account once it's set up.

Should I wipe the old phone right after setting up the new one?

Wait until you've confirmed the card count or inventory value matches on both devices. It only takes a minute to check, and it's the difference between a clean handoff and re-entering cards from memory.
